Guest Post: Women Wielding Blades @ vvb32 reads

Inspired by recent book covers sporting images of women with swords, daggers, knives, etc. I decided to create an event featuring some of these books.
Join me this week and meet some female characters who kick-butt with blades (giveaways included).
AND, feel free to share some titles that you enjoyed reading.
Here are a few snippets...

The particular inspiration for Butterfly Swords was the martial art of Wing Chun which was believed to be developed in secret in resistance to the Manchu rulers of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911 AD).

The Haunted E-Book by JL Bryan Blog Tour: Day 2 Guest Post + GIVEAWAY!

Top Ten Candies for Ghosts

Ghosts may show up at your door, especially around Halloween, and demand candy—if so, what should you give them? Everyone knows ghosts like jelly beans, but---

***SPECIAL EXTRAVAGENT GIVEAWAY***

We interrupt today’s regular blog tour stop to announce a special extravagant giveaway. When I put the tour together, I said one grand prize would be The Haunted Library ebook collection, a second would be a new Kindle with WiFi, and if The Haunted E-book reached the Top 100 in the Kindle store, anytime during the tour, I would also give away a Kindle DX.

However, that was months ago, and Amazon’s rankings aren’t as volatile as they used to be. So I’m lowering the bar: if The Haunted E-book reaches the Top Ten bestsellers in the Kindle horror category (even for a moment) I’ll go ahead and make the third blog tour prize available—one commenter from the tour will win a Kindle DX!

And we’ll try to make that happen today.

First, I’ve purchased a Kindle Nation Daily ad for The Haunted E-book, and a sample of the novel will be sent more than 10,000 Kindle Nation Daily subscribers today. That will help!

The Haunted E-Book

Second, I’m gifting up to 20 copies of The Haunted E-book via Kindle to people who comment here today. This isn’t one of those giveaways where you have 7 days to comment—the gifts will be given out today only, at about 9 PM Eastern time.

To enter, tweet about The Haunted E-book with this link in your tweet: http://amzn.to/dXudkY

You can make up your own tweets, but here are examples you can copy/paste if you like:

Is your Kindle haunted? http://amzn.to/dXudkY #hauntedebook

Or…

19th-century ghosts use 21st century technology http://amzn.to/dXudkY #hauntedebook

After you tweet, just paste your Twitter handle in your comment so we know you participated. Also leave your Amazon-associated email (you can use the form jeff (at) jlbryanbooks dot com if you like) so that I can gift you a copy of the book. I will gift up to 20 copies to people who participate today! If more than 20 participate, I’ll use random.org to pick the winners at about 9 PM Eastern tonight.

Commenting on this post within seven days also enters you for The Haunted E-book Tour Grand Prizes, including The Haunted Library, a Kindle Wi-Fi, and quite possibly a Kindle DX!

Thanks to NRS Vamp Chick for hosting today’s blog tour stop!

Tears on a Tranquil Lake by Marsha A. Moore Blog Tour & Giveaway

Haitian Vodou

From my first visit to the Caribbean, I was hooked. I love the culture, the sway of steel drum bands, the colorful cottages, the turquoise waters, soft sand, sun, delicious Marsha Moore, blog tour, author imagesseafood, rum beverages…and spine-chilling vodou. (And that is the right spelling for the Haitian tradition.)

Two years ago, when I moved to the Tampa area, I was delighted to feel the vibe of the Caribbean seeping into the local atmosphere, and it inspired me to write. The result is my new book Tears on a Tranquil Lake.

Several scenes in my book Tears on a Tranquil Lake involve Haitian vodou. I dug up some interesting finds in my research which I’d like to share.

The vodou worship centers around deities known as Loa, subordinates to a god called Bondye. The Loa are intermediaries, connecting their god with humans. Vodou often seeks to venerate the dead and protect persons against evil witchcraft. Veneration of the dead is based on the belief that the deceased, often family members, continue to exist and influence the fortune of the living.

The type of vodou practiced in Haiti draws from faiths of the African disapora, Louisiana Voodoo of New Orleans, Santeria and Arara of Cuba, and Umbanda of Brazil.

When vodou practitioners came in contact with Roman Catholicism, their supreme being, the Bondye was associated with the Judeo-Christian God, and their loa become the saints.

Vodou followers regard Bondye as the creator of everything. The name is French, meaning “good god.” Bondye is distant from its creation. Because of this, he is aloof from everyday matters and the faithful don't believe they can contact the god for help. Instead, they aim their prayers to lesser entities, the spirits known as loa. The most notable loa include guardian of the crossroads, spirit of love, spirit of rain and magicians, spirit of agriculture, and divine twins, considered to be the first children of Bondye. These loa can be divided into groups: Petro, Rada, Congo and Nago. The Petro and the Rada are the most opposite, because Petro are hot or aggressive and restless, whereas Rada are cool or calm and peaceful. The Petro loa are the most feared.

In my book, a character Teega, a vodoun Mambo, plays an important secondary role. Mambos (Female Voodoo Priest) or Houngans (Male Voodoo Priest) are usually people who were selected by the dead ancestors (loas) and received divination while he or she was possessed. He or she is expected to do good by helping and protecting others from spells, however they sometimes use their supernatural power to hurt or kill people. Many in those parts both revere and fear the Mambo or Houngan.

This is certainly the case in my book, Tears on a Tranquil Lake. Teega commands authority. No one wishes to be on her bad side. Come read how her web of vodou weaves a magical adventure around the characters she meets.

Excerpt:

Tears on a Tranquil Lake excerpt, Chapter Ten

The Black Hawk made port and its crew secured her to a dock. In every direction I looked were pirate ships.

Sam sidled up to me. “Feast yer eyes, lass. There be every type of privateer vessel here today.” He pointed them out, one by one. “Next to us be a square-rigger, massive enough to store plenty of booty . . . over there be a nimble sloop fitted with its dress canvases . . . and there, a two-masted brigantine workhorse . . . and farther back, a fleet of schooners with shallow drafts to make swift course in shoal waters.”

“Amazing! And all fly the skull and crossbones flag,” I said.

“That be the Jolly Roger, the buccaneer mark displayed aside their own war pennants, like ours be a black hawk set on a red field.”

What a sight, seeing dozens of fine sailing vessels docked or anchored in the tropical cove.

With the gangplank finally lowered and secured all hands anxiously waited for the captain to come on deck to dismiss them. Although only a few moments passed, the men grumbled.

Black Sam shot them a long, fierce glare before Raphael appeared.

The captain grinned from ear-to-ear, his booming voice full of excitement, “Aye, ye scallywags, the Hawk sets sail again midday tomorrow. Be here or be left behind. Now get yourselves ashore.”

They all scampered onto the dock like mice, yelling and laughing in anticipation of merriment and adventure.

Raphael proudly extended me his arm. “Ciel, you look lovely. Let me now show you the wonders of Tortuga.”

Along the promenade that followed the shore I struggled to match his gait. I was impeded by my less than agile tail flipper, and glad for his arm.

He sensed my dependence upon him and beamed, in high spirits. Smiling to familiar faces, he tipped his three-cornered black hat, its billowing white plume waving in the breeze. He looked dashing, outfitted in a purple waistcoat and gold brocade jacket. Slim black trousers and knee-high dress boots with shiny silver buckles accentuated his trim physique.

I smiled at him, pleased to be on his arm for reasons more than for physical support.

Everywhere I looked strode the most bizarre beings and unusually dressed people imaginable. At the sides of the promenade, men swallowed blades of any cutlass, dagger, or sword passing buccaneers might volunteer. In amazement I paused to try and discover their secrets, while Raphael pulled me along by the arm with my head turning back over my shoulder, mystified.

Scantily clad women preformed miraculous contortions, happily accepting gifts of doubloons tucked into any edges of their skimpy clothing or body orifices the seafarers wished to leave tips within. Their spines seemed boneless and I wondered if they were truly human.

Many merfolk, both male and female, accompanied pirates, while others sauntered alone or mingled in groups of their own kind. The mermaids all looked so beautiful, wearing lavish golden jewelry and their hair gleamed in the sunlight. I felt rather plain in comparison with only sea baubles for adornments.

The pirate captains and their staff all dressed in an eccentric array of finery. They lent a festive atmosphere, in their bright colors, fancy hats, and tall boots. Garb from around the world proudly boasted, of their travels in the Caribbean, as well as remote destinations of the Far East and Africa.

Amongst the mariners I caught a glimpse of one extremely odd creature strolling past who made me gasp. I could not help but stare. I knew not whether the being was male or female. I could see human legs, covered with pants and shoes, but also the upper body of a seal. I whispered to Black Sam beside me, “What is that sea creature?’

Noticing my bewilderment, he chuckled. “One of the bizarre wonders of the abyss. Pure magic. That be a common sight only on the land of this isle. He's a selkie who's not donned all his sealskin.” He pointed to draw my attention, which was unnecessary, since my eyes were already fixed to the sealman. “See that brown mass danglin' down behind him? That be the rest of it. Left out his legs, likely, so he can walk.”

“I envy him. I wish I could pull my scaly skin back to find some feet to walk upon.”

Raphael was smiling and listening to our conversation. “Don’t forget I can solve that problem for you, Ciel,” he whispered in my ear.

I sensed pressure to make my decision conveyed in his tone, and a wave of panic swept over me, taking my attention from the selkie.

The captain tightened his grasp upon my arm and looked imploringly into my eyes for that answer.

My pulse raced, unable to grant him the choice I knew he expected, yet also unable to leave his world behind for the sea.

Paper Cut Reviews

Howdy Everyone! Today Amanda has been gracious enough to let Chas and Myself *Steph* guest post on Not-Really-Southern Vamp Chick *sneaky grin* Thanks Amanda! So we would like to talk about ghosts today!

Steph’s Guest Post:

Here in Chicago we have alot of local ghost stories or urban legends. It’s actually a pretty haunted city now that I think of it *getting the creeps now*. One of our most famous ghost stories is the one about ResurrectionCemetery JusticeIL Resurrection Mary! So the story goes it’s a dark and stormy night *of course* and while the motorist is driving down this long road he sees this young woman in a white party dress standing at the side of the road. He of course pulls over to ask if she needs a ride and before he knows it she is in the passenger side. He starts to drive although she tells him nothing of who she is or where to go. Then as he drives she suddenly screams “STOP”!  Before he can stop and turn to her she is gone! As he looks up he sees that he has stopped in front of  the Resurrection Cemetery.

Resurrection Mary has been sited since the early 1930’s down that same long stretch or road *Archer Ave* right by Resurrection Cemetery and at the Willowbrook Ballroom. Some interesting sitings  at the Willowbrook Ballroom where cab drivers have picked her up and men have danced with her *gulp*. Every encounter explains Mary as a beautiful quiet fair skinned young woman with blond hair and pretty blue eyes. Also each encounter ends the same way with them bringing her down Archer Road and her suddenly telling them to stop in front of the Resurrection Cemetery. Each motorist says they never heard or saw her get out of the car she just vanishes...

image

What do you think? Do you believe this story? Heck do you even believe in ghost? Do you have any local ghost stories? If yes tell us the story . I leave you with final thought when you pass a cemetery on a dark and stormy night will you pick up that ghostly girl hitch hiker on the side of the road, lol!

Giveaway:

Okay I will be giving away a copy of Chicago Ghosts by Rachel Brooks along with some cool zombie magnetic book marks;) So all you have to do to enter is answer one of the questions above and leave your email address in your comment. Thank You! Have a Happy Halloween!

Chas Guest Post:

Aloha Not-Really-Southern Vamp Chickies=)  Thank you Amanda for the invite to share ghosts stories.

Hawai'i, like every where else has its own unique culture.  Within culture thrives all sorts of life.  The ancient Hawaiians were a highly oral people with a high literacy rate.  Stories and legends were passed through the generations orally and could be recalled with clarity.  A variety of old stories are still prevalent today like Ka huakai o ka po- Night Marchers, the Mehehune or of Pele (the Fire Goddess) disguising herself to seek aid and those who turned her away would perish as the lava flowed.

Though today, I am going to take Steph's lead and share a ghost story that also involves a woman ghost in a white dress.  This story has origins in modern Hawai'i.  Well, not so modern but certainly not ancient.  The year 1917 on the lush East side of O'ahu, Hawai'i there is a tale of adultery that will have any husband or wife with roaming eyes and wondering minds think twice.

A man and his wife from the States came to live and cared for the Makapu'u Point Light House located in Waimanalo.  Story goes, this husband met a beautiful Hawaiian girl who he was having an affair with.  As time went on the wife had learned of this affair and demanded he break the relationship off immediately.  Distraught,  the wife drove away in tears.  This road is very curvy today so back then I can only imagine how curvy and uneven it must have been.  Anyhow, the wife lost control of her car and went over the side.  It is said that as she was found, before death's grip, she uttered the words of revenge on her cheating husband.

Not long after becoming a widower, the husband lost control of his car and ended up in the same predicament with the same ending- entering death's door.

Years pass and there are still stories told and sightings of seeing a woman in a white dress walking along the road way in the dead of night.  Many say to avoid her wrath leave your windows rolled up and lock your doors.  Others have told stories of cheating husbands being caught by the scorned Woman in a White dress.  Causing cars of cheating husbands to break down on the darkened road and being taunted by her apparition and whisperings.

So just like Steph asks- could this story be real? Or do these men need to get their cars tuned more often? Is it fair that the cheating men are singled out? Is this a load of poop? Well, no one knows but just like Steph has a story of a woman dressed in White clear across the Pacific blue some 3700 miles away.  Hawai'i has a similar one and I am willing to bet you have one in your neck of the woods too?

For any of you who have been to Hawai'i or plan to.  The Makapu'u Light House is a popular destination.  Plus, there is only one road there and back.  Heck there is only one road connecting the East side.  So chances are you have been there or will go there one day.

Will you be driving it at night? Beautiful by day- deadly by night fall? *Mwahahahahaha*  A whole new spooky look at Paradise.

LovLivLife's Giveaway:

Hmmm, I was considering giving away a title about Ghost stories and legends in Hawaii but not much variety is available online.  I can buy them locally but shipping costs can be the pits.  So seeing has how Not-Really-Southern Vamp Chick & LovLivLife Reviews love the same kinds of books I would like to offer one winner a Book Depository book under $10 but it has to have something dealing with ghosts.

Search for a title then link it in the comments.  *rubbing hands* I can't wait to see what you all come up with.

Both contests will end October 31st. Make sure you answer questions for both is you wish to enter both. :)

*Updated: Both giveaways are international as well. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear. So enter away! :)

Lanae Tatman Guest Post & Scentsy Giveaway! [CLOSED]

I met Lanae on Twitter and lucked into winning one of her fabulous Scentsy products. When I saw some of her current products, I just had to ask her if she wanted to be involved in this. Luckily she did. So here she is!

I love Halloween! I have so many memories of awesome Halloween’s that I really struggled deciding what to share.

Over the years, I went as many different things. My more memorable costumes include a football player, a prostitute (I’m from NV where there are legal brothels), a black peter, and a hobo.

I could tell you about the year I was a hobo and it became my last year trick or treating. I was apparently very realistic (I’m sure my height was part of it) as after the first couple of houses, nobody would give me candy. I ended up standing at the sidewalk while my younger sister went to the doors and did her trick or treating.

I could share the year that my brother’s girlfriend of the time came over, dressed as Aunt Jemima. She was in her 40’s and a very short, white woman. But, she had an awesome costume. So, Dad told us to dress up and take her trick or treating to the brothels. As we had no actual costumes we used our face paint and dressed in all white and all black. After we had walked her through 2 casinos, we took her to the brothels. At our first door, the woman, a very beautiful black lady, opened the door laughing. She told us she knew exactly who “Aunt Jemima” was but she questioned our costumes (my sister and I). As we both drew a blank, Aunt Jemima boldly announced that we were her “black and white peters”.

One of my favorite memories now, is the day my daughter was born. In 2002, I checked into the hospital at 6:45 am. As the day wore on, I watched low budget Halloween movies, one after another. I’ll leave out the gory details, but let’s just say that my little Boo was finally welcomed into this world at 11:18 pm.

We get a little wilder each Halloween and I’m looking forward to more extreme parties as she gets older!

No Vacancies Blog Tour: Lucien Black Guest Post

It’s day 2 of Lucien Black’s take-over! So, here he is!

I am so happy to be here on Not-Really-Southern Vamp Chick’s blog. Thanks for giving me some time to reach out to your followers.

image Let me introduce myself, my name is Lucien Black, author of the Speculative Fiction Series, No Vacancies. I’ve been writing since 1989 and the lifelong dream was to be a published author with multiple properties in print. Finally, in 2008, after many re-writes, I published my first book, No Vacancies Volume 1 and this has been a fantastic journey. I’m here to introduce you to my works and hope that you will take this journey with me as well.

The concept of No Vacancies started with a profound love for all things comic book related. My early writing aspirations including becoming a regular writer of a comic book series. I attempted to break into the industry, but always found that the doors were closed. For those of you unfamiliar with the comic space, the industry is very tough and breaking in can be an insurmountable task. Artists journey from convention to convention, hoping for two minutes in front of an editor that will catch a glimpse of their work and give them a shot. Writers have a much harder time, since an editor does not have the time to read a script or a summary, while perusing portfolio after portfolio of artists. Eventually, I continued writing, but found myself writing for my own benefit rather than to seek publication.

Eventually, my wife challenged me to adapt a different style of writing to my scripts and convert them into short stories. I argued at first, but eventually found myself slipping easily into this new routine. What I needed was an idea that would convey the type of story I wanted to write, but for a while new medium. Taking some cues from the old movie serials, comic books and the old pulp magazines, I developed the concept of No Vacancies.

Two volumes of No Vacancies are released each year and each book contains four short stories. At times, the stories are stand alone, or appear only in the one volume of No Vacancies. These are ideas or concepts that I felt I needed to convey, but were not necessarily part of a bigger series or story. The first volume of No Vacancies contains a story called “One More Sunday”, which tells the tale of the events which led up to the death of the city’s primary superhero. In this noir thriller, Detective Sam Arkwright finds himself wrapped up in a case that is beyond his imagination and takes him to the edge and back as he uncovers not only how the Protector died, but secrets hidden away long ago but the reclusive superhero.

The other stories contained in the series are serialized or episodic tales, told over multiple volumes of the No Vacancies series. So, each volume of the series, contains a part or episode of the titled story. Outcast, for example, starts in No Vacancies Volume 1 and ends in No Vacancies Volume 4, with some heavy cliffhanger endings along the way.

With what I have in my writing repertoire, I expect there to be somewhere around fifteen volumes in the No Vacancies series and that is if I stop developing new series along the way. Already, I’ve jumped from 12 to 15 volumes, based on new ideas, characters or stories I wish to tell.

Starting in Volume 4, I introduce a new episodic series called Myth, which I expect to run over volumes 4-8. The next installment, Volume 5, introduces a superhero series called Seven. Seven tells the story of a superhero team that has fallen by hard times. Between character deaths and real- life challenges, the team is in utter chaos at a time when they are needed most.

Down the line, I see another installment of the Outcast series, picking up from where the story ends in Volume 4. There are some major challenges ahead for the characters of the Outcast series. I won’t give too much away, but expect a new villain even more ruthless than Adrian Vandenberg. The romance between Nathaniel and Detective Jackie Thompson will also start to see some light in the second installment of the Outcast story.

My first foray into the Fantasy genre will be coming soon as well. The Smokey Tower, told over multiple volumes, introduces my take on wizardry and the fantastical creatures and races found in traditional fantasy novels. Much like the horror elements of Outcast, I want to create a story with unique twists on old themes. I want readers to jump into these stories and feel familiar yet wildly unfamiliar with the concepts and ideas.

Along the way, future installments of No Vacancies will also have several stand-alone short stories, all combining elements from multiple genres and should promise for a continued wild ride.

Blog Tour: Lauren Hammond Guest Post

She walks in beauty, like the night. Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that's best of dark and bright. ~George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron.

image

What would you do if you could walk the lengths of earth forever? If you had the choice between death and living for all of eternity, what would your choice be?

Cara Jones didn't have a choice. The year is 1710. Cara Jones awakens to nothing but darkness. She can't figure out where she is, what she is, or why she seems to buried six feet beneath the earth's surface.

After discovering that everyone she loves had just suddenly vanished Cara sets out on a journey to London. London at night is a world Cara has never seens before, where drunkrads stagger out of pubs and harlots roam the streets. But in London, Cara finds most importantly what's she's become. She finds out why her body is changing, why she's feeding on innocent strangers, and why she can't come out during the day. It takes a man like Andrew to bring Cara to the realization of what she really is, a monster, a creature of the night, a vampire.

When writing Love Sucks, the only thing I could think about was creating and developing the character Cara Jones. I wanted my readers to know her, love her, and empathize with her. I wanted my readers to put themselves in her shoes and feel her pain, love, and heartbreak. I wanted them to ask themselves, what would I do if I were Cara Jones?

I've heard the coined phrase this is just another vampire book at least a dozen times already. I can assure you, this is not just another vampire book. For one, it's completely told through Cara. I felt the only way the readers could identify with her is if I told her story through her point of view. Secondly, the book isn't only a love story but, a character growth novel as well. We see Cara learning what she is, accepting it, and then trying to live her life out for the rest of eternity. Thridly. We begin in the 1700's but we don't end there, we slowly transition through time and make it smoothly to the year 2010.

This book began as a mental image and has evolved into so much more. It's got a little bit of everything tied into it Love. Self doubt. Revenge. So now I only have one thing left to say, are you ready to be sucked in?

In England during the seventeen hundreds, Cara Jones had her human life ended for her and she became a creature of the night. One moment she's an adolescent young woman living her life, the next she's lurking in the streets at night looking for her next meal. The vampire slayings in England became so brutal the whole race was nearly wiped out. So Cara and the clan she called her extended family fled to the U.S. to make a home. They kept to themselves and stayed out of trouble by feeding on recently deceased corpses and cleaning out blood supplies at local hospitals. When one of the clan members makes a mistake, they are once again being hunted and Cara is the only one who makes it out alive. Cara is officially the last vampire on earth. So when Cara awakes from a two hundred year slumber, she awakes to a new city, new people, and a new way of life. Cara sets out on a journey to find her soul mate, the one person who is designed for her. Along the way she encounters a zany new friend, a jealous co worker, and a man whom she can't live without. Dr. Jared Sayers is her destiny. Will Jared give up everything he knows to be with Cara? Or will she wander the earth for the rest of eternity alone?

BBA Post: Heather @ Darkly Reading Guest Blog

Today, I asked Heather to come by and talk about Mind Games by Carolyn Crane, since I know it’s one of her favorite books. You should all go check out Heather’s awesome blog Darkly Reading. You can also follow her on Twitter! Here’s Heather!

Darkly Reading,button,blog

Top 5 reasons to read and love Mind Games:

1. A flawed heroine I can relate too. Let’s face it – most urban fantasy heroines are flawed but in such extraordinary ways it’s hard to relate too – daddy’s the big bad destroyer of worlds and damaged your childhood, if you fall in love with someone you might suck away their life, your bad breath could destroy humanity (ok so that is not really an affliction from a book but some mornings I think I might have this superpower). But if you ever think to yourself maybe this potato salad at the family reunion will be your last or you forgot to wash your hands at a public restroom and are therefore destined to get a flesh eating bacteria then I have the perfect heroine for you - Justine. She uses her powers of hypochondria for good to break down the bad guys and man would I like to believe my own personal idiosyncrasies could lead to super powers.

Heather Guest Post,Benjamin Bratt

Kevin McKidd,Heather Guest Post

2. Picking a team (and a man for Justine) is like picking a food group. So by the end of Mind Games there are clearly two men going for the leading hero slot in Justine’s life – Otto and Packard who have been dubbed Team Cucumber and Team Kebab, respectively. They both have a lot going for them – Otto wears a beret and capes and is the hero of Midcity while Packard is a little dangerous and has that whole living in a Mediterranean restaurant while running a vigilante group thing going for him. I see Sanchez as Benjamin Bratt while Kevin McKidd makes a great Packard.

3. Superpowers through environmental pollution. Let’s face it – the way the environment has been abused lately it would be nice if someone could say..”hey I destroyed this pristine coastline but all the children born in this area will have the ability to destroy me with their mental powers.”

4. There has never been a supernatural called a disillusionist or highcap before. After all the vampires and werewolf books you’ve read lately isn’t it nice to add a new supernatural group to the family.

5. I wouldn’t call Justine a slut but she does see a lot of “action” in the book. I can’t help it – I love the smutty parts too ;)

Heather Guest Post,Mind Games

Well that’s my quick top 5 – I would love to hear who ends up on Team Kebab or Team Cucumber and who is your favorite disillusionist?

Vampires: Dead, Undead, or Something Else

by Roxanne Rhoads

In most myths, legends and even in plenty of popular fiction vampires are described as either dead or undead, sometimes referred to as walking corpses. No heartbeat, no need to breathe, no need to eat food or drink anything other than blood.

Honestly all that doesn’t make a whole helluva lot of sense to me.

For me vampires are different and extraordinary creatures- and not dead at all. Just different.

I see being changed into a vampire as a transformation, not necessarily death though in a way it is but not like what it is often described as. Changing from human to vampire can be a death of human life and rebirth as a vampire, but not a true death.

I can’t wrap my head around the concept of a vampire being dead because of several things.

One they need to feed to “survive”. If you need to survive then obviously you’re not really dead, are you?

Another thing- rapid healing abilities. If you can change and heal, how can you be dead? Dead things don’t heal.

Other things I don’t agree with are the cold skin and lack of heartbeat and breathing. I think vampires are evolved and don’t need to breath as often as humans and their hearts don’t beat like ours- and the slowness of their heartbeat and breaths has something to do with the whole immortality thing.

And the cold skin… when they get cold that just means they need to feed, if they are fully fed their skin is just as warm as ours.

That brings me to the need for blood. As I mentioned I see vampirism as a transformation, kinda like a disease that changes the body. It changes the metabolism and the higher functions of the body but to keep these processes going the body burns up its blood supply and constantly needs to be replenished.

The other powers of vampires- the glamour and mind control and all that, even the teleportation and shape shifting that some can do…well that goes into the magic slot.

I think vampirism is one part disease two parts magic.

In many of my stories the vampires defy the normal vampire conventions. They eat, they walk in daylight and they have heartbeats, and they breathe. I try not to describe them as dead or undead and I don’t stick them in coffins or in the ground.

Mostly I make my vamps pretty appealing, but they’d have to be since I mainly write erotic romance and erotica. No one would want to be getting sexy with something grotesque, would they?

Want to check out my newest vamp tales? I have two new erotic vampire short stories now available. “Cemetery Seduction” is in Dark Tales Digest released by MidnightShowcase.com and “A Last Goodbye” appears in Like That Spark released by Circlet Press.

Hank Quense Guest Blog

image

My name is Hank Quense and I write humorous and satiric fiction, either fantasy of scifi. According to family rumors, I was born before the middle of the last century, but most family members don't believe the rumors. Since that dubious beginning, over three dozen short stores and fiction writing articles have been published. I also have a novel, Fool's Gold in print and ebook versions and a ebook on fiction writing advice, Build a Better Story. Today, I want to talk about a collection of short stories called Tunnel Vision. It contains twenty previously published stories, many of them no longer available anywhere else. Tunnel Vision is available in both ebook and print versions. I think the best way to introduce the collection is through the book blurb:

Live longer. Laughter is good for your health. Read this book and you may live longer. Unusual characters, settings both strange and familiar, and bizarre plots are a few of the things you'll experience and enjoy. Aren't you tired of reading scifi and fantasy stories that take themselves too seriously? Well, you won't find any stories like that here. It doesn't take anything serious. Politicians, Shakespeare, Lord of the Rings, the military, aliens, the undead, they all get cut down a notch or two.

image

One of the stories is called Rainbow Bridge and here's a synopsis. Gary Helgeson finds an old amulet that belonged to his aunt. He brushes off some dirt and inadvertently summons the god Loki from Asgard. The god has been summoned to go on a quest for the amulet owner and can't return to Asgard until he completes the quest. Unfortunately, Gary doesn't have a quest for Loki. Things go downhill from there.

Saving the Shore is another one of the stories. (Think Lord of the Rings here). Frido, the mayor of the Shore, has a big problem. The Shore is about to be invaded by a construction crew of trolls headed by Freddie Mac and his girlfriend, Fannie Mae. The trolls plan to cut down trees, build roads and pave them. After the roads are in, Freddie Mac will build apartments and shopping malls. To preserve the nature of the Shore, Frido recruits a wizard, an elf maiden bard and a dwarf ax warrior. Together they journey to a mountain where they steal powerful artifacts from an old dragon. However the wizard can't get the artifacts, a series of rings, to work. Then the angry dragon shows up and wants his rings back.

My favorite review of the book is this one:

"If you're tired of science fiction and fantasy that take themselves too seriously, or just want a little relief from the horrors of the daily news, this collection will have you chuckling, snickering, and maybe laughing out loud. Quense has sharpened his satirical pen to let the hot air out of everything from historical characters and classic literature to politics and national defense. Yet "many a truth is spoken in jest" and you'll find plenty of food for thought between giggling fits and guffaws." This one came from another author, Jan Clark.

If you still aren't convinced to buy a copy, here are five more reasons:

  • Relax, have some laughs. Laughter will relieve stress and lower your blood pressure.
  • Meet new and interesting characters, many of them really bizarre.
  • Visit mythical Gundarland, a land populated by humans, dwarfs, elves, half-pints and . . . yuks.
  • Find out what happened to the Ringbearer's descendants.
  • Met a Zaftan.

So far, my sales of Tunnel Vision are going like gangbusters. My projections show that I'll break even in 2065. After that, I'll be laughing all the way to the bank. Getting published is definitely the best investment I ever made, even if it does a bit of time.

And now, I interrupt this interview for a commercial break. Fool's Gold is a retelling of the ancient myth about the Rhinegold. My version takes place in the future rather than in the Dark ages. I also replace fantasy creatures with two different races of aliens. A Ring of Power? Forgetaboutit. Now it's a Chip of Power.

In Build a Better Story, I describe how a process to put together a story. It's based on my own writing experiences and on critiquing hundreds of stories. Using the techniques described, you too can duplicate my astounding lack of success in fiction writing.

In closing, I feel I must provide potential readers with a list of precautions to take. First, check with your doctor to determine if you are healthy enough to take part in spontaneous laughter. Second, if you are suffering from a contagious disease such as the flu, wear a mask to limit the spread of airborne germs when you laugh out loud. Finally, no one should read my stories while driving a car or operating heavy machinery.

My website http://hankquense.com has a lot of stuff about me, my stories and my writing. My blog http://hankquense.com/blog has several new posts every week. I blog about my books, the characters I create, life in the modern world, book reviews and even an occasional rant. I'll leave you a link to the trailer for Lucy in Love, one of the stories in Tunnel Vision.

Blog Tour: Alayna Williams Guest Blog and Giveaway!

Story prompts can be found in the oddest of places.imageI’d wanted to write DARK ORACLE for years, but was struggling about who the protagonist should be. I knew that she would be a criminal profiler who uses Tarot cards to solve crimes, but I didn’t know anything more about her personality than that.

So, I picked up my Tarot deck, shuffled, and drew the Queen of Swords from the top. The Queen of Swords depicts a woman staring pensively into a stormy sky. She’s lifting sword as if it’s quite sharp, and extends her hand as if she’s cut herself with it. The swords, in general, represent intellect. The Queen of swords traditionally represents sadness and mourning or a particularly clever woman. I always associated her with the Snow Queen from fairy tales – cold, isolated, withdrawn.

And that interpretation was perfect for the story. The Queen of Swords became my inspiration for Tara Sheridan. Tara narrowly survived an attack years before by a serial killer called the Gardener. The experience left her physically and emotionally scarred, and she withdrew entirely from work and from life. She even exiled herself from an group of oracles to which her mother belonged, Delphi ’s Daughters. It would take a special force, a counterweight, to pull Tara from the solitude of the Queen of Swords. And I began to think about a complicating factor for Tara , something that would shake her out of her frozen world.

I used the same method of using Tarot cards to create Harry Li, a federal agent on the trail of a missing scientist who’s unlocked the destructive power of dark matter. I picked the Knight of Pentacles from the deck. The knight gazes seriously at the weight of his responsibilities. He’s a pragmatic man, not given to irrationality or anything that can be seen or touched. I thought a skeptic would be a perfect counterpoint to Tara’s mysticism. Since Pentacles are also referred to as coins in many decks, I gave Harry the nervous habit of jingling change in his suit pocket.

Whenever I got stuck in the story, I pulled out the deck and used the cards as prompts. In that way, the story grew more organic, leaping from one image to another as I shuffled the cards.

imageCan an oracle change the future she sees?

Tara Sheridan swore off criminal profiling years ago. By combining Tarot card divination with her own intuition, she narrowly escaped the grasp of a serial killer who left her scarred for life. She put down her cards and withdrew from work and society. Now, Sophia, a member of an ancient secret society connected to the mythic Delphic Oracle, asks Tara to find a missing scientist who has unlocked the destructive secrets of dark energy. Tara resists— she fears reawakening her long-buried talents and blames Sophia’s Daughters of Delphi for the death of her mother. But, grudgingly, she agrees to search for the missing scientist, Lowell Magnusson.

Tara travels to Las Alamos National Laboratory, the location of Magnusson’s disappearance. She meets the serious, impatient, and highly attractive Agent Harry Li— and re-encounters her old partner, Richard Corvus. Corvus is now chief of the Special Projects Division, a position Tera might have held, had she not dropped out of investigative work. Corvus considers Tara mentally imbalanced and not to be trusted— but it may be Corvus who is untrustworthy.

Tara’s investigation and Tarot cards tell her Magnusson’s daughter, Cassie, may hold the key to her father’s plans, and that they both are in grave danger. Meanwhile, Corvus and the Daughters of Delphi have their own plans...and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

DARK ORACLE will be followed by a sequel in 2011.

Werewolves and Wolves Fiction and Facts

by T.L. Mitchell

Over the years there have been many paranormal romances and thrillers written containing werewolves. In past years, the term werewolves struck fear into the heart of anyone who heard the term. However, lately werewolves are used in another form as friendly and loveable. So how do we term the evil creatures from the good creatures? What is the difference?

In our discovery, let’s start with understanding some facts about wolves. Wolves have been very badly misunderstood animals over the last decade. They are important creatures to our eco system. Many farmers and live stock owners disagree, claiming they are a nuisance and should be destroyed. Truth is wolves are just as important to our world as the air we breathe.

Wolves are the largest member of the canine family, with a height from 26-32 inches. They weight from 55-130 lbs and have a life span of approximately 7-8 years. Some wolves have been known to live 10 years or more. The diet of wolves consists of large hoofed mammals, such as dear, elk, moose and caribou. I think you see why live stock owners would consider wolves a problem. In Alaska, there are an estimated 7000 to 11,200 wolves and more than 5,000 in the lower 48 states. In earlier times, there were estimated populations of up to 2 million wolves, where now there are only estimated 200,000 in 57 countries.

In the mid 1930s, wolves were once common creatures in North America and killed in most areas. Today their range has been reduced to minimal areas throughout the US and Canada.

The behaviors of wolves are mainly pack-like. They live, travel and hunt in packs of 4-7 animals. The packs include the mother and father, their pups and several other young wolves. The alpha female and male are the pack leaders that track and hunt prey. These leaders choose den sites and establish the pack’s territory. Wolves develop close relationships with one another and strong social bonds. They demonstrate deep affection for their family and may even sacrifice themselves to protect the family unit.

Werewolves are considered wolf-shape shifters by many. The name werewolf comes from the “wer” Old English term for man. Man-wolf. Legends around the world speak of men and women who could turn into wolves and back into human form. In their animal form, the werewolves were bloodthirsty creatures that devoured humans.

The werewolf legends occur in all parts of the world. Some scholars have suggested that these transformation legends are no more than echoes of ancient ceremonies where people wore animal skins.

An interesting note, European werewolf tales date back from ancient times. A Greek king named Lycaon was turned into a wolf as punishment for serving human flesh to the gods. The Greek word lukos(wolf) and anthropos(man) comes the term lycanthropy.

Now let’s discuss the difference between werewolves and Lycans. We know they pretty much mean the same thing- a man (or woman) who can turn into a wolf. Truthfully, they do not need the light of the full moon to change. They can change at will. So where do we form the opinions of bad and good werewolves? In Europe, the werewolf folklore is not just a simple myth or legend. There was a time where werewolf legends were rich and varied in stories. These stories were interesting as we begin to see tales about hero werewolves and a variety of species. So in fact, the werewolves in the older, darker days were considered blood-thirsty beasts. Which is probably where we come up with the evil looking, more scary creatures in the movies.

Another folklore, I would not want to pass up is the one I use in my Dark of kNight Series. My wolf- shape shifters are termed Lycans and they hunt evil werewolves. The background history on their characters is from the Native Indian’s folklore. Some facts about where the Native Indians came up with their legends were said to be based on early settlers. The early settlers brought with them their European beliefs and either retold old tales or created new ones. This statement or fact, I disagree with. The Native Indians are rich in their folklore, legends and beliefs. It is my belief that the Native Indians already had stories about wolf spirits, eagle spirits and shape-shifting long before the European settlers arrived.

If we would take the true nature of a wolf as a Lycan, then we would see a family who has a strong relationship, loving and would die for one another. The parents would be the forefront leaders of the pack and the children would learn from examples and discipline. Does this sound like an evil creature? Not really. This sounds more or less what we find in our paranormal romances or shape shifter novels. I think any woman who reads a story about a strong male, determined and confident wouldn’t swoon in his arms…werewolf or not.

SECOND ANNUAL MILITARY FAMILIES CONTEST

By Sara Taney Humphreys author of the Amoveo Legacy

Last year, as a special thank you to our service members and their families, I held a unique contest for U.S. Military Wives. It turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience. I had the privilege of meeting several amazing women and their beautiful families. The war that our soldiers are fighting is splashed across our television and computer screens on a daily basis. In many ways, I think we become almost numb to it all. When that happens, it's easy to forget that there are real people who are deeply affected by it, people who don't have the luxury of tuning it out. The families of our soldiers live with the harsh reality of this war every single day. Hearing the personal stories of these families helped me remember that our troops are husbands, fathers, brothers and sons who are immensely loved and sorely missed.

I have decided to make this an annual contest. I am very excited to report that ASMBA-STAR, an outstanding organization for Vets and their families, has agreed to continue their partnership with me.

This year the contest will run from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Once again, a portion of my annual book sales will be donated to ASMBA-STAR.
Who is eligible? Well, this year I've opened the contest up to ALL U.S. Military Families-- Moms, Dads, Sons, Daughters, Wives, Husbands, Sisters, and Brothers. If you have a family member that is serving our country...tell us about them!

Once a week, beginning Memorial Day weekend, I will pick one entrant to be highlighted on my blog. These weekly entrants are semi-finalists. Labor Day weekend I will select three winners.

Second Prize: A $25 Amazon Gift Card, a signed copy of The Amoveo Legacy and a Team Amoveo T-Shirt.

First Prize: A $50 Amazon Gift Card, a signed copy of The Amoveo Legacy and a Team Amoveo T-Shirt.

Grand Prize: A book signing event at their local Bookstore and the winner will be the special guest of honor. Five free signed copies of The Amoveo Legacy. (1 for them and 4 of their friends) They'll also receive a $100 Amazon Gift card and a Team Amoveo T-Shirt.

For details on how to enter please visit my website and click on the "Contest" tab.

I hope you'll help me spread the word about this contest. I look forward to meeting more incredible families! You can support our veterans and their families by purchasing a copy of The Amoveo Legacy or donate directly to ASMBA-STAR .

What if everything you knew turned out to be a lie?  You find out that you aren’t even human—at least not entirely. What if, one day, you realize your world will never be the same again? These are the questions that Samantha Logan must face in “The Amoveo Legacy”.  A dream on her thirtieth birthday compels her to leave her artists loft in New York City and move back to the beach with her Grandmother, Nonie.  However, the instant Samantha steps foot on the salty shores of her childhood home, she realizes the landscape has changed.

The moment she encounters the mysterious, arrogant neighbor Malcolm Drew, her life is never the same. Through a seductive courtship, he introduces her to the magical mystical world of the Amoveo. The dream walking, telepathic, shape shifters that he claims are her true heritage.  However, Malcolm holds back a secret that could destroy them both. Will he be able to protect Samantha and convince her of the secret legacy buried deep inside of her?
