BBA Post: Carolyn Crane Interview Part II & Giveaway!

There was a contest at the beginning of the month were you all were asked if you could ask Carolyn a question, what would it be? Well, I did it for a reason. Here is your interview of Carolyn! ;)

Carolyn Crane

Dwayne: Justine seems like a very unique character. Who/what inspired this character?

Carolyn: As a reader, I’ve just always related more to underdogs and vulnerable characters, so I really wanted to create a heroine like that. You know how some scenes stay with you? I remember a scene in Die Hard where Bruce Willis was crying, because he was walking over shattered glass with bare feet, but he still had to be this hero. Moments like that in books and movies, where strength is mixed with vulnerability, inspired Justine.

Lillie (AliseOnLife): If I could, I'd actually like to ask Carolyn Crane how hard it is, during the writing process, to balance having a strong female character, with a woman vulnerable enough to turn to the male MC for help?

Carolyn: Ooh, what a great question! I don’t like any character who is an island and never needs anybody, whether male or female. I think it’s a point of strength to be confident enough to ask for help when you need it, so that’s something I try to keep in mind. I think as long as a character is pushing beyond her comfort zone, that is the most important kind of strength. My character is struggling to overcome her fear in these three books, and that’s the most critical struggle, and as long as she’s brave in other ways like that, I think it’s normal and even heroic to accept help.

Bethany C: I would ask the author if the model on the cover resembles how she pictured Justine in her mind?

Carolyn: Sort of! The Bantam art department asked me what Justine looked like, and I went on the internet and found photos of women who I thought resembled her. The gal on the cover is a bit more sexy than what I had in mind, but I’m good with that cover overall. (Though, when I was writing the book, I was hoping she could be wearing a bloody nurse’s dress on the cover. LOL. It’s probably good I didn’t get that wish.)

jellybelly82158: I would like to ask Carolyn if there will be more in the series.

Carolyn: Yes! This is a trilogy. Book #2 comes out in September, and #3, the grand finale, will hopefully hit in spring!

Katie A., EVA SB, JenM: I would ask Carolyn if she knew anyone afflicted with a disorder and if that was the inspiration for this book or if it came to her out of the blue and she had to do a lot of research.

Carolyn: Oh, yes. I have several acquaintances and family members who are different degrees of hypochondriac, and I went through a phase with it myself - not like Justine, but enough to get how it works, on a thought level. How a person can fool herself and scare herself.

Tore: What made her decide to write books?

Carolyn: A love of reading, combined with a penchant for daydreaming, I suppose, drew me to write. It just gives me so much pleasure to curl up with a good book. And I’ve always daydreamed scenarios and plots, so it was sort of natural to put pen to paper.

stacey: What gave you the idea mind disorders run in my family.do you know somebody that has one?

Carolyn: Well, many of my pals and family are various shades of neurotic.

Though, one thing - I used to have this friend who was slowly going insane—conspiracy theories, voices, the whole deal. It was really terrible, and sad. And whenever I’d hang out with him long enough, then afterwards, I’d feel a little crazy and wired, too, as if I’d soaked up his tormented energy.

So in a that sense, I think zinging already happens on a very minor scale. You hang out with somebody who’s intensely angry or depressed—or incredibly light and happy, and it greatly affects you. Could internal darkness be weaponized? Could a person deliberately attack another person in that way? Probably not, but that was a germ of the plot, too!

Vixen Pearl: If she could write Justine as a bad guy, what kind of harm could her beloved MC get into?

Carolyn: Ooh, I love when good characters turn bad. Justine is sort of devious when she wants to be, and if I wrote her as a bad guy, I think I might make her angry that she spent so much of her life feeling like an outcast. Maybe a world domination plot! She could hook up with the Silver Widow!

Robin K: What is BBA? I suppose I would ask besides BBA what other networking events is Carolyn part of?

Carolyn: Help! Social networking has taken over my life. Especially Twitter. Also Facebook, and BBA is a group on Goodreads, which I’m on, and I really enjoy. I love making new friends and seeing what people are up to, and what they’re reading.

Sandy!: I would ask her what she does for getting inspiration?

Carolyn: I daydream about characters. Sometimes I also like to go running, and listen to loud music and clear my head and ideas pop in.

Joan: My question, was there ever a time you just wanted to give up? If so, what made you continue writing this book?

Carolyn: Oh, yes, there have been many times. Sometimes it used to seem like everybody had a book deal a year after they start to get serious about writing. That's not my story. It seems like I've been writing fiction forever, and I wrote several unpublished novels, but my books never quite fit anywhere. Then, after YET another disheartening near miss, I sat down and said to myself, Well, what the heck, if I'm never going to sell anything, I should at least have fun. That's when I thought up this plot. And actually, I entertained myself greatly while writing it, but I also worked really hard.

What made me continue is that I believed I could do it. I think it’s key to believe in yourself, and look at your failures as the foundation on which success is built, rather than proof you’re no good. I’m happy for all my failed, rejected books. I think they made me a better writer.

“Lucy & Hikari”: I'd like to ask Carolyn what are some of her favourite songs?

Carolyn: I really like the music of Blur, Aimee Mann, Cat Power, and Alice in Chains.

davidpurse: I would ask her what inspired her to write?

Carolyn: Reading really inspired me. Don’t you just enjoy being in the world of a book? Writing, for me, is a way to be deeper into that. And a love of daydreaming up scenarios and interactions.

Midnyte Reader: I would like to know why Carolyn picked hypochondria as her heroine's flaw? Is it a statement on today's society when there is so much disease and illness?

Carolyn: That’s an interesting thought. I think, with the Internet and pharmaceutical ads, it is definitely easier to get obsessed with health and sickness. In a way, horrible diseases are like the ultimate monster in the closet!

heatwave16: Is Carolyn a hypochondriac or part hypochondriac??? I know my honey has it a bit, even though she won't admit it.

Carolyn: I definitely went through a phase of it! And I know quite a few people who are really serious hypochondriacs. Though, from reader responses, it seems like everybody has a tiny bit of it in them. Good luck to you and your honey!

Hey! Thanks for all these interesting questions! It has been so fun to have Mind Games in BBA! You guys rock!

BBA Post: Carolyn Crane Interview

Thanks so much for being here today with us Carolyn! It's been a lot of fun having Mind Games as our July Book Bloggers Anonymous book!

Carolyn: Hey, thanks so much for having me! I’ve been so excited that you chose Mind Games. It’s a real honor.

Carolyn Crane

Can you tell us about yourself?

Carolyn: Well, I live in the middle of Minneapolis. I’m married with two cats, and I live a pretty sedate life. I love writing and reading. In addition to writing novels, my freelance/day job is writing websites and brochures for businesses, which is cool because I have to learn about a whole lot of different things, from how windows are made to the shapes of tiny lenses on reflective vests. You never know when that will come in handy in a novel! Right now, I am struggling a lot with trying to be less of a messy person.

Where did you get the idea for Mind Games?

Carolyn: Well, the way I got the idea is that I had just read this horribly depressing quasi philosophical book (Straw Dogs by John Grey) that takes a super dismal view of humans. It made me feel really awful, and I thought, if I had an enemy, I would give them this book as a gift, so that they could feel as disillusioned as I did. In fact, I actually recommended it to somebody I was mad at. (Snort. I’m not really a bad person! But I did do that.) Then I thought, what if there were people who disillusioned other people for money? Hey, that would make a great book!

Who have been your greatest inspirations?

Carolyn: For Urban Fantasy, it would definitely be Kelley Armstrong. I think she’s amazing. Her writing is so tight and good, her characters are rich and real. Uh! I could go on! Also, Kresley Cole. She’s an inspiration in a different way - I feel like she has this bold, fearless, playful creativity. She does really big, wild things in creating her characters and plots. Also, Laurel K. Hamilton. She has been such a teacher to me.

Who are your favorite authors or what are your favorite books?

Carolyn: In addition to Armstrong, Cole, and Hamilton, I love books by Meredith Duran and Megan Hart. I’m endlessly impressed with the intricate, convincing way they portray emotional struggles and romantic interaction. I think Jeri-Smith Ready (WVMP series) and Meljean Brook (Guardians) and Nicole Peeler (Tempest) are doing smart, strong fresh things right now.

What books had you heard amazing things about but were very disappointed with when you read them?

Carolyn: Gah! I plead the fizzith!

Is there a character in fiction that you've always identified with more than others?

Carolyn: Yes! Georgina Kincaid from Richelle Mead’s Succubus series. I don’t identify with the succubus part, LOL, but I’ve always felt like I would enjoy being her friend, and I feel as though I “get” her. I also identify a lot with Anita Brookner’s loner heroines.

There is a somewhat comic book type feel to Mind Games, was that what you were going for? Have you read many comic books?

Carolyn: What’s funny is that I didn’t grow up on comic books, but I absorbed enormous amounts of 1970’s TV reruns, like Get Smart, Batman, Wonder Woman, Six Million Dollar Man, graduated to James Bond and other action adventure movies. And I was the biggest Nancy Drew junkie ever. So, I feel like I’m coming out of more of an adventure tradition. Though, I went through a big Judge Dredd comic book phase, and I know that’s there.

Mind Games,Carolyn Crane

Can you tell us a bit about Mind Games?

Carolyn: I wanted to write a book where I could pack in some of my favorite fictional elements. I love tortured heroes. I love messed-up underdogs finding each other when the whole world has rejected them. I enjoy books where things aren’t black and white, where there aren’t easy answers, because that sort of thing makes me think. (Though, much as I like questions and ambiguity, I like conclusions, too. FYI.) I love being surprised when things aren’t what they seem. And of course, I love a bit of smutty action. LOL. I think a writer has to be really engaged in the stuff she’s writing about.

Who was your favorite character to write?

Carolyn: For sure that would be Shelby. I loved coming up with the stuff she’d say. She is so extreme, but there’s a weird way where she sometimes makes sense. Also, I enjoy her fashion sense. I love coming up with her outfits.

Is there a scene that was particularly difficult for you to write?

Carolyn: The scene where Justine comes home to Cubby and finds him with the Silver Widow was hard. And she has to make that sacrifice, letting him go to protect him, and bear his loathing. Justine is somebody who has always wanted people to like her, especially Cubby, and I felt for her there, in the details, like the Silver Widow wearing the robe instead of her, and Cubby having put her clothes by the door. Looking at Cubby’s favorite glass later in her apartment. Those details had a lot of sad impact for me.

What I'm sure many people want to know is, where did the idea for a hypochondriac hero come from?

Carolyn: Fear is almost always a liability, so I liked the idea of turning it into a strength. And the hypochondriac thing is something I know, because a few people in my family are hypochondriacs (and I’ve gone through phases of it, though nothing near Justine, but enough to get how it works). I have acquaintances are the serious kind of hypochondriacs, and I got a lot of details through the years about what they deal with. So it seemed like an interesting challenge, I guess!

I know you just got back from RomCon. Are you going to be at any other events, conventions, or signings anytime soon?

Carolyn: Nicole Peeler and I are working up a fun little Midwest mini-tour for early October (Chicago, Milwaukee, etc) Which is perfect, because Double Cross, Book #2, comes out at the end of September. And I might visit the San Francisco Bay area this winter, and arrange signings for then. Other than that, I hope to attend RWA in 2011. I’ll put anything that happens on my website and in my newsletter.

Thanks so much for joining us!

Carolyn: Thanks so much for having me! Seriously, you are my first book club, and it’s just such an honor!!

BBA Post: Double Cross ARC by Carolyn Crane Giveaway!

As I’ve mentioned before July’s book for BBA is Mind Games by Carolyn Crane. I’m going to take a detour to explain what BBA is again, because I’ve had some questions. BBA stands for Book Bloggers Anonymous. It is the brainchild of Steph @ Paper Cut Reviews. We wanted a place where we could all get together and discuss a book in detail with other book lovers and not worry about having spoilers out there or anything that you worry about on your blog.  So a few of us kept discussing it and throwing names out and more ideas, and BBA was born. A book gets voted on once a month for the next months book and that is the book discussed on Goodreads.  One blog is the host blog every month, and it rotates. It’s up to them what they want to post pertaining to the book. It can be anything from contests, to interviews, to their reasons for loving the book/series. Another note: it’s called Book Bloggers Anonymous, but it is a public group on Goodreads so anyone that would like is welcome to join. You don’t necessarily have to be a blogger, you just have to love to read and discuss books! End detour.

So, have you read Mind Games and are now anxiously awaiting the next Justine Jones book, Double Cross, like I am? Would you like to be one of the first people to get your hands on a copy of Double Cross. Here’s your chance!

As the body count grows, Justine faces a crisis of conscience as she tests the limits of her new powers and faces an impossible choice between two flawed but brilliant men . . . one on a journey of redemption, and the other descending into a pit of moral depravity.

JUSTINE KNOWS SHE’S GOING TO DIE. ANY SECOND NOW.
Justine Jones has a secret. A hardcore hypochondriac, she’s convinced a blood vessel is about to burst in her brain. Then, out of the blue, a startlingly handsome man named Packard peers into Justine’s soul and invites her to join his private crime-fighting team. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal. With a little of Packard’s hands-on training, Justine can weaponize her neurosis, turning it outward on Midcity’s worst criminals, and finally get the freedom from fear she’s always craved. End of problem.

Or is it? In Midcity, a dashing police chief is fighting a unique breed of outlaw with more than human powers. And while Justine’s first missions, including one against a nymphomaniac husband-killer, are thrilling successes, there is more to Packard than meets the eye. Soon, while battling her attraction to two very different men, Justine is plunging deeper into a world of wizardry, eroticism, and cosmic secrets. With Packard’s help, Justine has freed herself from her madness—only to discover a reality more frightening than anyone’s worst fears.

Carolyn Crane Guest Post & Giveaway

*Contest is closed*

Day 12 of my Giveaway-A-Day Countdown to My Birthday Bash brings us Carolyn Crane. So now I turn things over to her:

Amanda, AKA Not-Really-Southern-Vamp-Chick, is having a birthday tomorrow! (May 13th! Yow!) Okay, so as a special gift, I consulted a special blogger psychic to find out what will happen on her 25th year! And amazingly, this psychic provided pictures from the future.

Carolyn Crane

First, Amanda, the psychic told me to tell you that your blog will get really famous, and you become a celebrity on TV. Wow, Amanda, that is really amazing. It must be all that twittering that you do.

Carolyn Crane

Your love of UF and paranormal literature endears you to people all over the world. Your face is everywhere! Or, at least, your eyes.

Carolyn Crane

The psychic went on to tell me that you, Amanda, become so amazingly famous, that you begin to forget about the little people. Like your cat, who now only relates to you through social media. Like Max Headroom. Oh, sorry Amanda, you’re too young to know who that is. Unfortunately, Carolyn Crane is not! Gah!

Carolyn Crane

The psychic then informed me that Chris Pine, who played Kirk on the Star Trek movie, would fall in love with you during your 25th year. I was like, are you SURE? And the psychic said, yes, Amanda, Not Really Southern Vamp Chick, will have Chris Pine’s heart!!

Carolyn Crane

The psychic sez: “Watch out, Amanda, because trouble starts when Robert Patterson also falls in love with you and your blog. You might not know this, but he is a little crazy.” The psychic told me to specifically warn you about that. And Robert’s love for you, which you will not return, will drive him over the edge. And he will kill Chris Pine.

Carolyn Crane

Chris Pine fans everywhere will be angry with you. They will think your clever blogging led to his death, and in a way, they will be right. Naturally, by this time, your blog is getting millions of hits each day. And you pimp Mind Games and I get amazing sales! Wow! You rock! Also, you have your own line of T-shirts and lingerie.

Carolyn Crane

Robert Patterson can’t give up. He goes into hiding, but puts wanted posters everywhere for you. He cannot live without you. He offers $5000!

Amanda, I’m sorry, after this, the psychic fainted. When I revived him, he said that’s all the further he could see, and beyond that is your 26th year, which I didn’t pay him for. Oh well. Happy birthday tomorrow! And I have prizes!

A gift pack of stuff I collected at the RT convention (bookmarks, pens, postcards, sexy playing cards and more) PLUS a signed copy of PASSION UNTAMED, a Feral Warriors novel (with shape shifters) by Pamela Palmer!!

How to enter: Answer this question: Will Robert Patterson ever find Amanda? AND fill out THE FORM.

Happy Birthday Amanda! xxoo Carolyn Crane

Justine isn't interested in Packard's troupe until she gets a taste of the peace he can promise. Soon she enters the thrilling world of neurotic crime fighters who battle Midcity’s depraved and paranormal criminals.

Eventually, though, she starts wondering why Packard hasn’t set foot outside the Mongolian Delites restaurant for eight years. And about the true nature of the disillusionists.
