Long time no see everyone! I swear I'm going to start getting better w/ this.

Lots has been going on for me over the past few months. So I'll try to hit the high points.

First,

My Etsy shop is finally staying a bit more active, though I could still use a little more love there! So please visit the NRSVampChick Designs Etsy shop!

Second, I have several shows this fall.

Had one yesterday for
Emily's Power For A Cure. All proceeds went to the foundation. It was a small show, but great people to be involved with!

I’m really excited about my show in 2 weeks (October 22nd)! I’ll be in Lexington, KY for A Day of Mystical Bloodlust! Workshops, authors, vendors & a Halloween Ball! How can that be bad! I hope to see some of you there! Find out more at http://adayofmysticalbloodlust.webs.com/

November 2nd I’ll be at Middle Tennessee State University for a small craft fair put together by some Middle Tennessee Etsy friends!

November 12th will find me at the 8th Annual Grace Lutheran Craft Fair! Last year’s show was my very first craft fair, so I’m looking forward to doing this one again! It’s here in Clarksville, TN.

Third, I’m extremely excited about this. It’s taken a lot of work!

Myself, along w/ 6 other Clarksville-area crafters, have put together a craft show of our own!

The Christmas Craft Bazaar on November 5th!

We will have crafters, retailers, food, door prizes & raffle drawings!

The door prizes you have to be present to win, and they will be given out all day.

For the raffle prizes you don’t have to be there to win! Hello! I am alive & ok. I’ve been a busy little bee. Sorry I didn’t leave you all with any info before I disappeared.

Reading has taken a bit of a backseat for me right now. I’ll still be reading & posting reviews on here when I have the time, but I won’t be accepting any more review requests & I won’t be having any more big events or maybe anything. It’ll just depend on how much time I have.

Finally having a working computer might make things a bit easier on me, so we’ll see how things go.

I’m moving most of my focus to my jewelry & other crafting though, so don’t be surprised if you see lots of jewelry stuff. I do have a jewelry blog. It hasn’t been updated for a while either. >_< But hopefully I can get that going again soon too. Please check out my NRSVampChick Designs blog sometime if you wouldn’t mind. It has links to my shop too, as does this page. I’m finally getting some of my newer items in there. I have tons around here for craft fairs, I just need to get some online.

So, as for the future of this blog. I’ll be around here and there, but not as active as I was I’m sorry. I’ll be working on reviewing everything I planned on reviewing in the past. You can find me on twitter and facebook still. Much love! <3

Inspired by recent book covers sporting images of women with swords, daggers, knives, etc. I decided to create an event featuring some of these books.
Join me this week and meet some female characters who kick-butt with blades (giveaways included).

There are so many great bloggers & blogs out there. A lot of which don’t seem to be known about real well, or are new and trying to get the word out about them. So how can I help?

I wanted to start Meet a Blogger Monday mainly for the new bloggers, or less well known ones that would like a little love. This way you get to know them a bit and can go check them out for yourself!

How long have you been blogging? Almost 4 Months

Are you mainly a book review blog or do you feature/review other things? I think of Books Devoured as a Book Blog. I post my views on what I read and other fun book related information.

What genres do you read/review? I am pretty eclectic. I am all about a great story no matter the genre. I am new to YA and I am really enjoying a lot of what is out there for teens. I do really love UF and some SciFi, but also Mystery and Thrillers. I am taking the Chicklit challenge this year hosted by ChickLit Plus which will be entirely new to me, I have never read anything in that genre!

What age group books do you prefer (middle grade, young adult, adult)? All of them!

Why? Three months ago (right before I started blogging) I would have said Adult, for sure! Since I started blogging and reading so many other blogs, you guys convinced me to try young adult and I am so glad that you did!

What’s something unique about your blog? I decided to not post "Reviews" I call them "My View" instead. I know it is just word play but it allows me to feel like I can be more honest and write my thought in a more engaging and fun way. I have a great post about the reasons for this, you can check that out HERE.

I also really try to feature many different genres of books. I tend to get bored reading the same types over and over without a break. I have figured out that I enjoy books more when I mix it up.

Who/what are your favorite...

Books? If I MUST choose just 1 it would be The Stand by Stephen King.

Series? The Hollows series by Kim Harrison (at least Today that is my favorite, there are so many greats!)

Authors? Stephen King is great of course. I could not narrow down my other favorites, there are too many!

Literary characters? I love all the characters in The Stand, the good guys anyway!

Literary couples? Cat and Bones from the Night Huntress series comes to mind, I am sure there are more!

Villains? I love to hate Belatrix LeStrange, It might be the movies that helps that.

Supernatural beings? I loved all the Fey characters in the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa

About Me:

I have an addiction. I can not stop buying books. I know that a lot of you share my addiction! I have little to no self control. I have an insane amount of books to be read that I own and yet I can not resist that shiny new awesome book I have been drooling over online for months. My husband is wonderful and indulges me. He now calls the mail man my dealer. He has remarked more than once that he is so glad I chose books to be addicted to and not something else. He has always told me that I don't read books, I devour them. When it came time to choose a blog name, that came to mind pretty quickly and I knew it was the right name!

Thanks so much for having me! This was a lot of fun!

I meant to put this up earlier, but I need a little help around here. I’m staying very busy & with nice weather on the way, lots of craft shows are coming up, so I’ll have even less time soon. I could really use another person helping me with reviews. You’ll notice there haven’t been many lately, because I’m running behind.

I love running the blog and all that, it’s mainly just the reviews I need the help with at this time. I mostly review urban fantasy and paranormal romance both young adult and adult, with other genres like horror, dystopian, steampunk, etc. thrown in here and there.

There are so many great bloggers & blogs out there. A lot of which don’t seem to be known about real well, or are new and trying to get the word out about them. So how can I help?

I wanted to start Meet a Blogger Monday mainly for the new bloggers, or less well known ones that would like a little love. This way you get to know them a bit and can go check them out for yourself!

How long have you been blogging? Since July 2008, so two and half years.

Are you mainly a book review blog or do you feature/review other things? Simply Books is mainly a book review blog but I do participate in Waiting on Wednesday and occasionally my original feature Book vs. Movie.

What genres do you read/review? Pretty much anything that's YA but I really like contemporary, dystopian, and historical fiction.

What age group books do you prefer (middle grade, young adult, adult)? Why? I prefer YA because all the characters are my age (for the time being) and the themes and stories are always wonderful and exciting and interesting to read.

What’s something unique about your blog? I have my own original feature Book vs. Movie where I compare a book and its movie counterpart. There are probably other bloggers who do the same thing but I have yet to come across them.

Who/what are your favorite...

Books? The Da Vinci Code, Heist Society, Anna and the French Kiss

Series? Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Mortal Instruments, The Uglies

Authors? Sarah Dessen, Scott Westerfeld, Deb Caletti, Jodi Picoult

Literary characters? Hermione Granger, Katniss Everdeen, Jane Eyre (thought it would be good to add a classic character :))

Literary couples? Katniss & Peeta, Jace & Clary, Anna & St. Clair

Villains? Voldemort, of course.

Supernatural beings? I'm not a big paranormal person, but I've read a lot of books about vampires so I guess them. Plus I love the tv show The Vampire Diaries.

About Me:

How long have you been blogging? Book blogging, about six months. But it's not consecutive, as I took a rather long break while pregnant with my daughter. I used to be All Things Print, but am back under a different name.

Are you mainly a book review blog or do you feature/review other things? Right now, I'm mainly a book blog. I would eventually like to get it to a book and writing blog, but the writing part is a ways down the road.

What genres do you read/review? Young Adult, Contemporary, Historical & Paranormal romance, and Urban Fantasy with the occasional thriller and suspense novel thrown in.

What age group books do you prefer (middle grade, young adult, adult)? Why? Young adult and adult. I understand and connect better with the characters. Junior high was an incredibly horrible experience, and I try to avoid anything that will remind me of those days!

What’s something unique about your blog? My reviews tend to be shorter. I know that I have a lot of blogs to read and don't always have time to read lengthy reviews. I tell you what I thought of it, either good or bad, and then move on. I'm honest. If I didn't like a book, I'll tell you why. And if I loved the book, then I have a tendency to gush about it.

Summary:

Dee escapes her dreary job and unfaithful boyfriend by reading romance and fantasy on her Kindle. She tries The Haunted E-book, the story of a 19th century tramp printer whose ghost awakens whenever someone reads a book he created. Then Dee learns the stories in the books are true, the malevolent ghost is real, and Dee might be the next character to die.

My Review:

The Haunted E-Book by JL Bryan is a rollercoaster ride of a book. Honestly, at first, I wasn’t sure who our main character was. There I was reading about Dee reading about Madison reading about Parker. Confused?

Still, I was intrigued and needed to know more. Reading about someone reading about someone and so on and so forth cracked me up. So while that kept me amused, there were plenty of scary moments to keep me wanting more.

Dee is a librarian working in a small town, who doesn’t get the respect she deserves and has a horrible, two-timing boyfriend. She does not deal with confrontation well. A lover of romance novels, she decides to try a bad horror e-book one night on a whim, when she’s really ticked off at her boyfriend. Bad idea.

I think what I liked most were the odd things and places that the horror was brought out most of the time. Mall toy stores, libraries, kindles, and romance novels are a bit off the beaten path from what I usually read. Well maybe libraries every now and then, but still. Plus the description of the “bad guy” is so detailed that I could picture everything happening.

This book was very refreshing. It keeps you guessing and had me reading away trying to discover the secret to The Haunted E-Book.

How long have you been blogging? Since September 2010

Are you mainly a book review blog or do you feature/review other things? Book reviews.

What genres do you read/review? I read everything but romance and manga. (Like from the romance section, however Karen Moning's fever series I have read, but that is more paranormal then romance.) I read YA, paranormal, horror, true crime, fiction, non-fiction, history books ect.

What age group books do you prefer (middle grade, young adult, adult)? Why? The YA genre has exploded and there are so many talented authors with wonderful stories out there. I also like a lot of the adult books, the stories are more invovled and there tends to be bigger story lines. When I want a quick read I read YA, when I want a longer more involved read, I read adult.

What’s something unique about your blog? I think just the vibe and feel my blog has is different from the others I have seen. I try t make it fun and also very to the point. I feel that the people who go to book blogs are there for book reviews and that is what I try to solely provide.

Who/what are your favorite...

Books? I have loved Catcher in the Rye for years as well as the Harry Potter books.

Series? Harry Potter is number one for me.

Authors? So many just a few are, Lauren Kate, Stacey Kade, Rachel Hawkins, Karen Marie Moning, Stephen King, Frank McCourt, Jocelynn Drake, Colleen Gleason, Dean Koontz,PJ Tracy, Brad Thor, and many more.

Literary characters? Love me some Eric Northman! Luce Price, Daniel Grigori, Draco Malfoy, Ron Weasley, Holden Caufield.

Literary couples? Luce Price and Daniel Grigori from Lauren Kate's "Fallen" series.

Villains? Voldemort.

Supernatural beings? Twilight ruined vampires for me LOL I really enjoy the Fae.

About me:

I'm 24 years old, I love animals, I am in the military, been reading since I was 2 1/2. Rude people bug me. I have noticed that sometimes people with the same name have a similar personality. For example everyone I have met with the name "Lori" have been some of the funniest people I have ever met.

I love the show Supernatural, I am a Dean fangirl and I kinda hope Sam leaves the show so we get more Dean. LOL

My Review:

We met Martha in Eve of Samhain as a secondary character. In Pleasures Untold she takes the forefront, and boy am I glad we get to know her better. This goth-dressing, vampire hunting witch has a lot going on and a major secret she’s guarding.

With the appearance of Xan, things start to get a bit complicated. The gorgeous Latin bartender saves her, but in the process reveals the fact that he’s a vampire, a very powerful vampire. There is much more than meets the eye to Xan, and Martha must battle her growing attraction towards him against her hatred of vampires. Could she really have a guardian vampire? Is there such thing as a good vampire?

As if this isn’t enough, there is a sudden rise in attacks in the area. Something big is on the rise, and it’s effecting everyone and will soon hit Martha very close to home.

Martha and Xan are wonderful main characters to follow and their chemistry is, well it’s just hot! Martha’s roommate Jessica plays a large part again in this novel, and there’s a new addition named Taylor. The two girls add in a lot of comedic touches along with a sense of normalcy every now and then to the chaotic supernatural world.

Pleasures Untold was a fast read, with characters that I’ve grown to love and hope to learn more about. There are times that some of the symbolism, metaphors, and language detracted from the story, yet other times they are very entertaining. Overall a great adult read!

My Review:

Eve of Samhain is the first novel in The Hanaford Park series by Lisa Sanchez. Ryann Pierce is your average college student, working her way through school and living in an apartment with her roommates. Then one day her world is rocked my the appearance of Quinn Donegan. The epitome of sex.

Quinn can have any woman he wants and with just a touch can make a girl weak in the knees. Women are his specialty and he’s spent centuries honing his skills. With his amazing touch there is a price though, and one that he might not be willing to pay this time.

Without being able to touch each other, can Ryann help save Quinn from his centuries old curse, or are they both doomed? Is it possible there’s another threat looming over them both too?

Ryann is a character that took me a bit of time to like. Though I really liked her strength towards the opposite sex, her lack of confidence in herself got rather irritating at times. I got most annoyed with her talking about the size of her butt way too often. Quinn had his jerk filled moments, but also could be a loveable and swoon-worthy guy. Then there’s Ryann’s roommates Jessica, her BFF, and the new scary gothic Martha. Both of them cracked me up.

I read this book all the way through without pause. It was a quick, fun read. While there were some metaphors that took me out of the story a bit a few times, overall the language used in it had me cracking up. The characters are all intriguing, and the setting makes you feel like it could be happening in any city around you.

There are so many great bloggers & blogs out there. A lot of which don’t seem to be known about real well, or are new and trying to get the word out about them. So how can I help?

How long have you been blogging? Almost three years, but because of some personal things I took almost a year off in the middle. I've been continuously blogging again since September.

Are you mainly a book review blog or do you feature/review other things? I mainly do book reviews, but I've also been known to do author interviews and giveaways, and just recently I've started participating in a couple book related memes.

What genres do you read/review? I mostly read paranormal/fantasy, but I've recently started to really like dystopian, and every once in a while I'll read a contemporary book.

What age group books do you prefer (middle grade, young adult, adult)? Why? I prefer young adult books, but sometimes I'll sneak in a middle grade book or an adult book. I feel like I can relate more to young adult books. I started reading YA books in middle school, and now that I'm in college YA is still my genre.

What’s something unique about your blog? I like to keep my reviews short and sweet. Some bloggers write out long, detailed reviews, which is great in learning about a book, but I don't have the attention span for that. I give a book a rating out of 5, give a short summary about the book, and then give my general opinion on the characters, plot, writing, and anything else I think might be important.

Supernatural beings? I love vampires and all the different myths that different books use about them. I like books about zombies, too, but I don't really like the zombies themselves (they kind of creep me out more than any other paranormal being).

Haitian Vodou

From my first visit to the Caribbean, I was hooked. I love the culture, the sway of steel drum bands, the colorful cottages, the turquoise waters, soft sand, sun, delicious seafood, rum beverages…and spine-chilling vodou. (And that is the right spelling for the Haitian tradition.)

Two years ago, when I moved to the Tampa area, I was delighted to feel the vibe of the Caribbean seeping into the local atmosphere, and it inspired me to write. The result is my new book Tears on a Tranquil Lake.

Several scenes in my book Tears on a Tranquil Lake involve Haitian vodou. I dug up some interesting finds in my research which I’d like to share.

The vodou worship centers around deities known as Loa, subordinates to a god called Bondye. The Loa are intermediaries, connecting their god with humans. Vodou often seeks to venerate the dead and protect persons against evil witchcraft. Veneration of the dead is based on the belief that the deceased, often family members, continue to exist and influence the fortune of the living.

The type of vodou practiced in Haiti draws from faiths of the African disapora, Louisiana Voodoo of New Orleans, Santeria and Arara of Cuba, and Umbanda of Brazil.

When vodou practitioners came in contact with Roman Catholicism, their supreme being, the Bondye was associated with the Judeo-Christian God, and their loa become the saints.

Vodou followers regard Bondye as the creator of everything. The name is French, meaning “good god.” Bondye is distant from its creation. Because of this, he is aloof from everyday matters and the faithful don't believe they can contact the god for help. Instead, they aim their prayers to lesser entities, the spirits known as loa. The most notable loa include guardian of the crossroads, spirit of love, spirit of rain and magicians, spirit of agriculture, and divine twins, considered to be the first children of Bondye. These loa can be divided into groups: Petro, Rada, Congo and Nago. The Petro and the Rada are the most opposite, because Petro are hot or aggressive and restless, whereas Rada are cool or calm and peaceful. The Petro loa are the most feared.

In my book, a character Teega, a vodoun Mambo, plays an important secondary role. Mambos (Female Voodoo Priest) or Houngans (Male Voodoo Priest) are usually people who were selected by the dead ancestors (loas) and received divination while he or she was possessed. He or she is expected to do good by helping and protecting others from spells, however they sometimes use their supernatural power to hurt or kill people. Many in those parts both revere and fear the Mambo or Houngan.

This is certainly the case in my book, Tears on a Tranquil Lake. Teega commands authority. No one wishes to be on her bad side. Come read how her web of vodou weaves a magical adventure around the characters she meets.

Tears on a Tranquil Lake excerpt, Chapter Ten

The Black Hawk made port and its crew secured her to a dock. In every direction I looked were pirate ships.

Sam sidled up to me. “Feast yer eyes, lass. There be every type of privateer vessel here today.” He pointed them out, one by one. “Next to us be a square-rigger, massive enough to store plenty of booty . . . over there be a nimble sloop fitted with its dress canvases . . . and there, a two-masted brigantine workhorse . . . and farther back, a fleet of schooners with shallow drafts to make swift course in shoal waters.”

“Amazing! And all fly the skull and crossbones flag,” I said.

“That be the Jolly Roger, the buccaneer mark displayed aside their own war pennants, like ours be a black hawk set on a red field.”

What a sight, seeing dozens of fine sailing vessels docked or anchored in the tropical cove.

With the gangplank finally lowered and secured all hands anxiously waited for the captain to come on deck to dismiss them. Although only a few moments passed, the men grumbled.

Black Sam shot them a long, fierce glare before Raphael appeared.

The captain grinned from ear-to-ear, his booming voice full of excitement, “Aye, ye scallywags, the Hawk sets sail again midday tomorrow. Be here or be left behind. Now get yourselves ashore.”

They all scampered onto the dock like mice, yelling and laughing in anticipation of merriment and adventure.

Raphael proudly extended me his arm. “Ciel, you look lovely. Let me now show you the wonders of Tortuga.”

Along the promenade that followed the shore I struggled to match his gait. I was impeded by my less than agile tail flipper, and glad for his arm.

He sensed my dependence upon him and beamed, in high spirits. Smiling to familiar faces, he tipped his three-cornered black hat, its billowing white plume waving in the breeze. He looked dashing, outfitted in a purple waistcoat and gold brocade jacket. Slim black trousers and knee-high dress boots with shiny silver buckles accentuated his trim physique.

I smiled at him, pleased to be on his arm for reasons more than for physical support.

Everywhere I looked strode the most bizarre beings and unusually dressed people imaginable. At the sides of the promenade, men swallowed blades of any cutlass, dagger, or sword passing buccaneers might volunteer. In amazement I paused to try and discover their secrets, while Raphael pulled me along by the arm with my head turning back over my shoulder, mystified.

Scantily clad women preformed miraculous contortions, happily accepting gifts of doubloons tucked into any edges of their skimpy clothing or body orifices the seafarers wished to leave tips within. Their spines seemed boneless and I wondered if they were truly human.

Many merfolk, both male and female, accompanied pirates, while others sauntered alone or mingled in groups of their own kind. The mermaids all looked so beautiful, wearing lavish golden jewelry and their hair gleamed in the sunlight. I felt rather plain in comparison with only sea baubles for adornments.

The pirate captains and their staff all dressed in an eccentric array of finery. They lent a festive atmosphere, in their bright colors, fancy hats, and tall boots. Garb from around the world proudly boasted, of their travels in the Caribbean, as well as remote destinations of the Far East and Africa.

Amongst the mariners I caught a glimpse of one extremely odd creature strolling past who made me gasp. I could not help but stare. I knew not whether the being was male or female. I could see human legs, covered with pants and shoes, but also the upper body of a seal. I whispered to Black Sam beside me, “What is that sea creature?’

Noticing my bewilderment, he chuckled. “One of the bizarre wonders of the abyss. Pure magic. That be a common sight only on the land of this isle. He's a selkie who's not donned all his sealskin.” He pointed to draw my attention, which was unnecessary, since my eyes were already fixed to the sealman. “See that brown mass danglin' down behind him? That be the rest of it. Left out his legs, likely, so he can walk.”

“I envy him. I wish I could pull my scaly skin back to find some feet to walk upon.”

Raphael was smiling and listening to our conversation. “Don’t forget I can solve that problem for you, Ciel,” he whispered in my ear.

I sensed pressure to make my decision conveyed in his tone, and a wave of panic swept over me, taking my attention from the selkie.

The captain tightened his grasp upon my arm and looked imploringly into my eyes for that answer.

My pulse raced, unable to grant him the choice I knew he expected, yet also unable to leave his world behind for the sea.

BBA February @ A Great Book Is The Cheapest Vacation: Nightkeepers w/ Jessica Andersen

So a new month has begun. It’s not exactly news that I’ve been slacking in the reading and blogging department, so needless to say I’ve been slacking in my book club. But no more!

Book Bloggers Anonymous has chosen it’s book for February and this month’s host is going to be Natasha from A Great Book Is The Cheapest Vacation! We’ll be reading Nightkeepers by Jessica Andersen.

The Mayan doomsday prophecy states that the world will end on December 21, 2012. The NOVELS OF THE FINAL PROPHECY tell of the ancient myths that come to life in the last four years before that end-date, and descendants of an ancient magic-wielding race sworn to protect mankind from the apocalypse.

In NIGHTKEEPERS, their last king is forced to team up with a Miami-Dade narcotics detective in order to reunite his scattered warriors and fight Zipacna, god of the Mayan underworld. Wielding ancestral magic based on bloodletting and sex, the king will have to choose between his duty and his love for the human woman who is the gods' destined sacrifice.

During my way too long absence on here, I’ve missed you all! I miss talking to you and hearing from you. All my readers mean the world to me, so I wanted to do something weekly that would give us a little more interaction. I know I’ve seen some other blogs do some similar things, but as it usually goes around here. This will be a bit different.

You can ask me any questions you like. Do you want to know something about me, the blog, blogging in general? Whatever you want to ask go ahead & I’ll try to answer.

I will warn you, I am not the most tech savvy person in the world and I’ve only been blogging for a little over a year, so for better tips on things like that, I am probably not your best choice. I will try to help how I can though.

So just leave a question in the comments and I’ll answer!

JL_Bryan: How did you come up with your blog name?

Hey there Jeff! Though most people think so, it has nothing to do with the Sookie Stackhouse books. It just has to do with me picking a name on the spur of the moment when I started a blog one day, not even sure what I would do with it.
The Vamp Chick part is easy enough. I'm a chick & I've always loved anything involving vampires. The scary ones, the broody ones, even the campy ones.
The Not-Really-Southern part comes from two things. I have family in Kentucky (north of TN for those good at geography) that talk about being southern & my lack of understanding of such things. o_0
Second, though I live in the south, I've never seemed to fit in much here, and have very few interests in common with those around me.
So I'm the Not-Really-Southern Vamp Chick. Whew. That was probably more of an explanation than you were looking for huh. lol

Stephanie: Who's one of your favorite literary heroines?

Stephanie- This changes all the time. It just depends on what I've read recently a lot of times, lol. Two that stay at the top of my PR/UF list & not b/c of the guys (though there are some of my fav guys too) are Jaz Parks & Mercy Thompson. LOVE them!
